The North western region of India is characterised by salwar suits- the most commonly worn apparel by both genders. Nearly 2000 years ago, this combination of loose flared trousers with a flowing tunic as the upper garment made its debut. Historical records of the royal burials, as far as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir and Punjab reveal the use of this apparel. Modern day salwar suits have now gone overseas and are also called ‘punjabi suits’- as most women from this region wear it. Many Punjabi women migrated to UK and US and continued to wear this typical ethnic wear to keep in touch with their roots in India.
